- About ten families lost their homes in this district during the famine. Some of them died on the roadside, others died in the workhouse, and others in their homes. The people who died in their houses might be a week or more dead before they were got. People used to dig a big hole in the ground and throw them into it. They would shake clay between each person and put a piece of stick cut in the shape of a cross down beside them for a headstone.
