- I have a churn at home. It is one of the old -fashioned barrel makes. It was made four years ago by a Granard cooper and bought on a fair day on the street of Ballymahon. It is three feet high, two feet wide at the top and two and a half at the bottom. There is a small nick in the top of the churn and another in the lid to show you the exact way to make the lid a proper fit. There are iron hoops on our churn. Butter is made twice each week in Summer and once in Winter. Mother does the churning. If a neighbour comes in he will take the dash for a while. It is believed if a person goes and you churning and doesn't take the dash the milk goes astray and you will be a long time churning before you get butter.
