- The forge my father goes to is in Newpark. It is owned by a man named Joseph Smyth. This man's father and grandfather have been blacksmiths before him. The forge is situated on the crossroads three miles from Newtowncashel and three and a half from Lanesboro.
I was often in the forge There was a big coal fire down, and there was a bellows for blowing the fire. There was an anvil on a block on the middle of the floor. There are rafters inside in the roof, the outside is covered with scraws. There is a pipe out of the roof for letting out the smoke. There are a door and two windows on the forge. The smiths shoes horses, asses, he makes ploughs and tongs and shoes wheels. He shoes wheels in a field beside the house where he has a drain to cool them when finished.
