- William McGoldrick who lived in the townland of Prucklish and parish of Newtownforbes was driving a cow through the village of Newtownforbes at about 2 o'clock a.m. and towards his home, and when passing Mrs Igoe's in the village Mrs Igoe came out on her door and told him that two policemen had gone down the town just then and had turned out on his road.
As it was such a late hour in the night William was wishful to have the company of the police for a part of his journey at least, so he drove his cow fast then, and after travelling about a quarter of a mile at a place called the swallow-hole he was nearing the police when suddenly they turned, and walked towards a big hedge of whitethorn bushes and stepped across it as if it had not been a fort in height.
William felt surprised, but he unconsciously walked to a broken down place in the hedge near-by and entered the field to see what had become of the policemen, but they were nowhere to be seen.
He hurried out feeling very much frightened now, and made for home as fast as(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
