  1. Over thirty years ago there was a terrible flood. It was flowing over the ditches and you would not know the roads from the gripes. There were two men upon an ass and cart comining from Rathowen. After passing the railway crossing they couldn't know where the road was and the ass turned the cart into the gripe and the two men were drowned. However the ass got himself from under the cart and he was found feeding in the
