  1. To make "Sowens"
Get a gallon of the seeds that come home with the meal from mill, and a plate of oaten meal. Put them in a crock. Get a gallon of soft (tepid) water and put it in the crock too. Leave a tin strainer on the top of crock this helps to sour the Sowens. Leave it for a week to sour, stir it well and strain. It makes a very wholesome drink and it used to be taken with stirabout on Black Fast Days
    Mrs Ross,
    Cloncaugh
Add pepper and sugar to "Sowens" and drink for a cold
