    workhouse. When the meetings were over he was driven back again to Hammond's, where, before leaving for this homeward journey, he partook of refreshments, and wrote his letters.
    The writer's mother, who was Mr. Hammond's daughter, often told us about him. He wore a heavy black "smocky" coat trailing long. He had to be lifted into, and out of, the saddle; lifted into the car, carried into the house and settled comfortably in his chair at the table to eat, or write. When on his horse he rode side-saddle and looked like a lady - the 'smocky' coat looking like a lady's riding habit.
    When writing, he manipulated the pen with his teeth and I believe 'twas something marvellous the speed with which he was able to write - his head bobbing up and down, over and yonder, to the pen's incessant motion.
