- Oaten, wheaten and barley bread were made in olden times from corn grown locally. The corn was dried in a pot on the fire and ground in a quern. The meal was kneaded with milk and baked on a griddle. The cake was cut in four squares. The bread was made every day only at Christmas.The day before the twelve vigil days, enough bread was made to supply the family until after Christmas. The bread was made on a bóorán. Potato cake was made on special occasions, as a novelty. A bóorán was round in shape with small shallow(continues on next page)
