for a short spell or perhaps all night according to custom. In latter case an invitation is usually given by the people of the place. It is usually a well patronised affair. " Blackmen " pour in from all parts - I have seen up to 200 people at such a function. Good manners require that disguises are discarded when the boys are going into supper so that the host or hostess will know who his or her guests are.
In some parts of the county e.g. around Bunclody district the young men on this night amuse themselves by playing tricks on their neighbours. They open gates or even carry them some distance away allowing the stock to stray about. Or they take ploughs and harrows and throw them from one field into another or perhaps hide them in some gripe.
But I never heard of such practices around here.
