  1. Cromwell had to cross the river at Arklow and hired one Carney by name to row him across. Cromwell asked him what reward he wanted to which Carney replied "All I want is the house I live in". Cromwell's reply was "A poor man I found you and a poor man I leave you". The descendents of Carney were always known as Cromwell's Carney's.
    The old thatched house belonging to Carney was standing until a few years ago. It was rent free forever.
