- About fifty years ago there was a hedge school in Annagh. It was carried on in an old outhouse of Mr. Donohoe's. It was situated beside the road, about three miles from Monaseed school. The name of the last teacher was Richard Carney
He was a lame man. He taught reading, writing and arithmetic.
There was only one long desk in the school and each class sat in this desk while writing, while the others were sitting on forms. There were about twenty pupils present every day. Each one of them had a framed slate and a slate pencil. They had no headline copies but the teacher used to write a headline on the top of each page. He was a beautiful writer. There was no fire in the school, but there was a hole in the corner of the school and the master often lit a fire in it. Then there would be a smoke and they(continues on next page)- Collector
