    than the walls of the houses nowadays. The houses long ago were roofed with straw and they are roofed with slates nowadays. The windows were very small and there was never any more than one window in each room.
    In nearly every house there was was a bed in the kitchen and it was called a settle bed. The fireplace was always at the gable end. The front of the chimney was made of clay and wattles. There was always a half door on every house long ago.
    The people used timber and turf for fuel long ago. There was no oil and the people used rushlights.
