On one arch there is a queer little figure carved called the Sheila na Geige. It is supposed to be a pagan Gog - the God of luck. This church was built by Dervogiolla when she did pennance for her great sin. She was the wife of O' Rourke of Breffiny, and while he was out fighting in the Holy War she ran away with Mac Morrough the King of Leinster. It was through her wicked deed that the English were first brought here to Ireland.
At the back of the church is a stone chair where people sit to cure a pain in the back. There is another chair like it beside King Flann's Cross.
