- (continued from previous page)opened and let the water in round the castle and save it from destruction. In (1649) when Oliver Cromwell was marching through the midlands and was ordering the people “To Hell or to Connaught” he cast an eye of derision on this lovely castle. He and his soldiers blew it up with gunpowder and left it as it now stands with fragments of its rough stones and masonary on one foot, standing in the ground some feet away from the main building.
