- Pinkeens are small fish, the biggest not being more than two inches long. Boys catch them with "Pinkeen Boxes" and glass jars as a pastime.
A Pinkeen Box is a kind of net or trap made from rushes plaited together. It is pulled along through the water where the pinkeens are.
The glass jar method is more used nowadays.
A long twine is tied around the neck of the jar. The jar is then dropped into the water and left there quietly until a pinkeen enters The pinkeens caught are usually let back into the water again, but they are sometimes brought home and put into a barrel or tub of water.(continues on next page)
