    of these schools. The teacher was paid according to his pupils. The pupils learned their lessons off slates. They had no copy books that time but they used as writing material a burned stick. They used to let the stick cool and when it was cooled they would write on a board. They had slates also and they wrote on them with slate pencils. The teachers were from around the country. One of the farmers used to keep him for a night
