    Many old people remember the famine times of 1846-47. There were more people in the district then than there are now. People died in great numbers. The potatoes rotted in the pits and drills and there are pasture fields in the district where the form of the ridges can be plainly seen because when the potatoes failed the ridges were never dug out and those
