The fact was that during the darkness he had skilfully taken his horses & men into the mtn through the secret entrance which was covered with a natural screen of briars and greenery. Just when the Saxon was about to move away baffled & disappointed, one of Cahir's horses neighed inside. The soldiers immediately advanced to the assault but were met with heavy fire from the mouth of the cave. They then prepared to starve Cahir out. They encamped round the opening. After many weeks an approach was made & no resistance met with. Their task being completed they withdrew. During the foregoing weeks different men tending sheep on the Carlow side of the mountain saw men gesticulating in the fissure high up on the mountain side but being of a superstitious turn fled taking their flocks with them.
