- Adjacent Coal Mines.About one hundred years ago there were coal mines in operation in this district. In close proximity to this school there is an old farm disused lane or pathway going from the road outside northwards, through Mr. McDonald's land. Right through the bog, and ends in the townland of Augharue, about two miles distant. At that time this was known as the Collier's road. A large number of colliers and their families lived in a big row of houses there. Of course they did not work the big mines in a large scale. Their means and implements were inadequate for that. They had only crow-bars, picks, hammers, sledges. About seven years
ago Fr. Coyle R.I.P. came to
Mr. McDonald's land with a man who was sent by the government. They found that there was an amount of coal under the surface. he said he would do something, but nothing has been done up to the present. Fr. Coyle was very anxious(continues on next page)- Collector
