their raids up Carlow way before they had time to take off their masks but the black mare could not be found. The prosticutors wanted to produce the mare in evidence but could not find her and it was a sister of Finnegans that told them where the mare was. He had her stabled underground and it covered with a lot of furbushes.
Finnegan and Nolan was tried in Carlow and found guilty and sentenced to be hung. Phil Whelan of Rath was a witness against him and he was Finnegan's landlord as well. Says Finnegan to Phil Whelan in the court "You were the cowardliest man I ever robbed, I robbed you at your own hall door with a cabbage bun".
The two was hung together in Carlow. Nolan declared on the scaffold that all he ever got for the robbing was ten pence.
When the boys was bringing Finnegan back to be buried all of them were drunk and had to carry him on a bearer. I suppose the coffin wasn't well put together: the foot of it fell out and the corpse fell out on the road before they seen it.
I think he was buried in Rathwilly.
