They had a small pot which they used to call a grisset and they used to put it on the fire and melt grease in it.
Then they would dip each rush in it and leave them up to dry.
After that they would be ready for use. It was an old custom at Twelfth night to light twelve rush candles while saying the Rosary. - Most people in the country live in thatched houses. Thatching is done with either straw or rushes but mostly with straw.
First the straw has to be threshed then it is pulled and water put on it in order to make it damp. Next it is made into bundles and then it is ready for use.
