  1. The landlord who collected the rent in Sleemane was Colonel Kemmis. He was not a hard man but his ancestors hanged rebels in '98. The people were never put out of their homes by Colonel Kemmis. The people had not to pay heavy rent. Colonel Kemmis was in the English army. He lived in Fananerin.
There is a verse about his ancestor
    "Upstart Kemmis joined the gang,
    Another added weight
Whose father did expertly hang for gold in '98
Whose grandpa reaped, and followed the plough,
    And strove with Fortune's daughter
But its little he thought his grandson now
would be head of the Boyne water"
The Boyne water was a brewery in Rathdrum
