- Most marriages take place here between Christmas and Lent, and there are usually a good many on Shrove Tuesday.Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, are said to be lucky days for marriages, and June and December lucky months.Long ago when men thought they were not getting enough money with the bride, they would get a heifer or a calf.Some matches are still made and wedding feasts are held in the bride's house."Strawboys" wearing hats made of straw, visit the house, and if they get in, they dance.When they go outside the house, they burn the hats, and make a bon-fire, and have fire works.
