- The old houses long ago were made with clay and the roofs were thatched with reeds that grew along river banks. There was a bed in the kitchen of each of them in the corner nearest the fire, and it was called a settle bed. The fire was against the gable wall in some of them and in the middle of the floor in others. The chimneys were made with clay and wattles. Some old houses had a hole in the roof for a chimney.
