- About fifty years ago, there was a hedge-school in the townland of Shankill. It was situated in the shelter of Shankill Forth, about two miles from County Cavan.
It was under a rock, over which, grew a bunch of whins. The people took such interest in learning that they supplied fire and light at their own expence.
A man name James Brady, from Alacken {?h} taught in this school. His pay was a penny a night from each pupil.
There were no pencils, nor pens at that time, and the children had to write with chalk on slates.- Collector
