- (continued from previous page)in Cavan town. He was a very good poet. He died at the advanced age of eighty two. He died in the County Home, and he was buried in Cullies. His ancestors were not poets. He was a very good scholar, and he liked poetry very much. He was deaf, and he was very poor. He went about the country in an old ass and and cart.He wrote a poem about Brefni, and it was called "The boys of Brefni". He wrote in English and Irish.

Cavan - In the years 1846 and 1847 there was a great famine in our district. All the crops failed to grow. Three or four years before the famine, the potatoes were so plentiful that the farmers threw them behind the ditch, to rot.
Then the hand of God changed for their waste. As it is a very old saying (makes a woeful want) "a wilful waste makes a woeful want". The people used to go to other countries such as, America. That time there were free(continues on next page)- Collector
