- (continued from previous page)said that a protestant man Fulton who owned the land in which the wells were and who did not like the pilgrimages drowned a cat in one of the wells. It was believed that this cat destroyed the healing powers of the wells and people stopped coming to them.
An old man by the name of Edward Fitzpatrick of Kilnaleck Butlersbridge Co Cavan who died two years ago at the age of 84 told me he heard it said that a hump in the shape of a cat grew on the man Fulton's back some short time after he (Fulton) drowned the cat in the well. N.B. The names mentioned in the above and those farmers who were born and reared in the district and whose families appear to have lived there for generations.- Collector
