- (continued from previous page)Writing was done in those hedge-schools with a pen and a pencil. There was a blackboard in the school. The Teachers remained a long time in the district. When the children went to sit down in the school they sat on the floor.
- The animals I have at home are cows, calves, asses and a horse. The names of the cows are Polly, Bawney and the red cow. When driving the cow's in or out of a field the people say pruggie, pruggie. The cow-house is built with stones and mortar, and the roof is covered with iron. It is called a byre. The cows are tied to stakes with a chain round their necks. When the cows go to thief they are tyed by the legs. The chains are made from iron. Blessed Balm is put in the cow-house to bring(continues on next page)
