   Civil War. Afterwards he got a clerkship at the Army Head Quarters and wrote with his left hand. He was married, had one son and he is dead about 60 years. He wrote songs on the "Spalpins" going to harvesting in Meath. He also wrote a song about a man that went to auction his crops and other effects and described all the man had to auction in verse. Some of the lines ran thus:

   A footless form without an end
   Would be very convenient to seat a friend.

   Patrick Mc Philips was born about 70 years ago and he lived in Coragh. He had not a good education but was gifted with poetry. He could make songs and rhymes at his will. The last song he made was on a wandering goat that strayed from Lavey and roamed about Coragh for weeks. He left this country for Scotland and nothing has been heard of him since.
