    be thrown into a round basket on the middle of the floor. "The basket", they called it; each member of the family then sat on stools here and there in the kitchen. They never sat round a table as we do. They put a pinch of salt beside them on the stool, they went then to the "basket," chose a potato to their liking, went back to their seat, peeled it with their fingers "fingers were made before forks" and are it out of their hands. Each potato was washed down with plenty of buttermilk and so they ate and drank till they felt they had enough.
    The evening meal was the same as the morning one -
