- Home made toys.Long ago the people used amuse themselves by playing different tricks, and making toys of various kinds.
An old game was "jackstones" and the boys and girls would take great interest in playing it. Some girls used plait rushes and make a skipping rope and spend their spare time skipping.
Some boys used make a spinning top from a spool and they would make it in the following way. First they would get an empty spool, and pare one end of it. Then they would get a small stick, and put it in the spool, and then the top would be complete.
Other boys would make a pot-gun, and they used have great fun shooting with it. It is made in the following way, first a piece of [?] is cut and the soft part in the heart burned out of it. Then some paper is well chewed, and plugged in each end of it. Next another piece of stick is got called a ham-rod, and when it is crushed in suddenly the paper will shoot out making a loud report. The people used make snares, and set them to catch hares, and rabbits, and they would make(continues on next page)
