- Local CuresLong ago the old people had cures for every illness. These cures were made by repeating a certain prayer or charm, which was to restore health at once. There had to be a different charm applied, but these secrets were not known to everyone. If there was a second son or a second daughter in a house they could have a cure for some evil. The cure for a sty was to point the thorns of a gooseberry bush at it. This was done each day for nine days. The way mumps were cured was to made a halter and put it on the person and make him walk backwards into some out(continues on next page)
