Some people are reputed to be possessed of the "evil eye", and it is alleged that when they cast that eye upon a young child, there is grave danger of some evil - perhaps early death befalling it. Those people are also supposed to affect animals in the same way. And as a counteract to their evil gaze, you should say to yourself when meeting them: - "God bless their heart, and eyes, and all they see & ever will see.
