- (continued from previous page)no ranges in the houses.They had a fire on the hearth. They burned sods in the fire because there was no coal. They also cut down trees and burned them in the fire. The chimney went up in the middle of the house so that one chimney would do for the other fires.
There were clay floors in these old houses. They clay was put in and tramped and pressed down and it made a fairly good floor. They had no lamps in these old houses and they used pieces of bog deal for giving them light at night. In places where there are cases placed beside the fire where bog deal candles were hung.- Collector
