  1. Potatoes are a very plentiful crop in Co. Cavan. Every farmer and labourer - anyone who has a piece of land - grows potatoes. On a ten acre farm about one acre is given to potatoes.
    The farmer ploughs the ground in the Spring time. Sometimes he scatters farm yard manure on the field at first, and ploughs it into the ground. More often he just ploughs the ground, and harrows it before rising the drills. At the present time most of the potatoes are planted in drills, though some still plant them in ridges. When they are planted in lea ground (that is in a green field) they are always planted in ridges with spades.
