- In Gartnabraher there is a holy well about one mile from Ballyjamesduff. It is known as the Friars Well. During the time of the Catholic Persecution in Ireland some monks went to reside their for safety. The well is a small square hole in the ground about four feet deep and in it is a Trout and no ones knows how long it is there. Some old people say that one time some one took the fish away and till the 15th August the well went dry.
About three months after the trout was put back in the well. Some people who resided in the neighbourhood passing saw the well full of water and the fish in it also.
People used to go to the well on the 15th August each year and pray, and drink some of the water to cure Sickness, and bathe any sores with the water. This practice is long discontinued.- Collector
