- (continued from previous page)through the country, came to Ballinlough just when the priest was saying mass in the church (the ruins of which are still to be seen). The priest fled with chalice and Vestments to the castle & hid it in an enclosure, but he was brought out and hanged on a tree know as the "hangman's tree". O Reilly hid and Cromwell took the castle. He went away leaving his soldiers on gaurd. When he had gone O Rielly appeared and challenged the soldiers to fight who refused and ran away. Cromwell, hearing this, was very angry and ordered him to be hanged.
