  1. Houses Long Ago
    The cabin usually consisted of one room. It was built of mud and had a hole in one gable called "Poll Dheataigh. For every chimney on the hovel five shillings rent had to be paid. The roof was covered with scraws out of the bogs. Sometimes it was thatched outside the scraws. A hole which was blocked during the night with straw and left open in the daytime gave light to the room which acted as kitchen, bedroom and parlour.
    The floor was made of daub. While the daub was still moist boards were put on top of it
