- (continued from previous page)Bonfire night was considered a great night. Huge fires were lit, in every farmer's yard on St. John's Eve. They used give weeks before hand gathering furze and sticks to make the bonfire, and when the cows were milked they made them walk over the fire. This was considered lucky and a guard against peshogues. The poor class had their own sport. They made one large fire and they danced and sang around it till morning.A whitethorn tree was also considered lucky if set on May day. In several old farmyards to the present day, we see a large whitethorn tree. This we are told was planted in the manure heap on May morning and the May Bush.
