  1. The people of this country have a great many sayings, and some of them are funny, some of them are wise, and others of them are foolish but each one of them has some meaning. The following are some of the ones I have heard.

    "Strength" said the wren when he pulled the worm up from the ground.
    "The devil is sweeter than them" said Kilue to the crabs.
    "He would smoke the tail of an ass"
    This is said to a person who is very fond of smoking.

    "He would drink Lough Erne acht soc caol do bheith air." This is said to a person who is very fond of porter.

    "He did it like máthair Seáin Bháin"
    This is said to a person who does every thing right.
    "Fight fair and stop scraping"
    said the drunken man to the furze bush
    "At it again" said the grainne óg.
    "If you fall do not wait to rise"
    This is said to a person who is in a hurry.
    "The longer you live the more you will see" said Pegín when she saw the aeroplane.
    "He is deaf as a bittle"
    This is said to a person who is very deaf.

    "He is as akward as craoibh shuas
    This is said to a very rough person.

    "Beef to the heels like a Mullin Garr heifer"
    This is said to a person who is very fat
