  1. Travelling people do not call to our house as frequently as they did long ago. The people that used to come to our house long ago are nearly all dead and are hardly any poor people going around now. The people long ago were very poor and some not too poor. The real poor ones had to depend on the food and lodging they would get of charitable people. Some poor women still call to our house and they have a lot of small articles for sale such as little pictures, strainers, pot cleaners, pins, needles, and boot laces. People generaly buy from them even though they do not have much need of these things. Some beggars are welcome because they tell stories. The poor people used to get lodging in farm houses and it was firmly believed that anybody who would not give them lodging would have bad luck
