    and buy the cattle. When they are making a bargain the buyer spits on the palm of the hand and then strikes his palm on the seller's palm. If they were arguing about the price they say "Split the difference." Tolls had to be paid long ago at the entrance to the Fair Green. This custom began in the bad times when the landlord had to be paid a tax on every animal brought to the fair.
