    Ballinacragga about a mile from the village of Newmarket on Fergus. The tunnel was built by an engineer named O'Byrne, a Wexford refugee who fled to Clare after "Vinegar Hill". The O'Briens (Inchiquins) of Dromoland sheltered and befriended him, and in return he built the tunnel to drain an overflowing lake upon the estate which was giving trouble (Mr Moloney, Newmarket.)
    Inchiquin of Dromoland was the leader of the Clare Yeomanry formed to suppress the United Irishmen in the County.
    Singleton was the officer in charge of the Tradree Cavalry and his house was raided by the United Irishmen. The district was scoured by Singleton's cavalry, and a reward of fifty pounds was offered for information. A secret committee of magistrates was formed to receive information and Charles Fitzgerald of Shepperton was Treasurer. A number of parishoners of Tradree came forward and publicly took the oath of allegiance to the English King before Michael Dalton a magistrate.
