- (continued from previous page)in it was usual that they gave a hand with the churning as this was considered lucky. You would know then the butter would be made by looking in to the barrel, and you would see the butter formed into small lumps. The milk which was left was called buttermilk. This was given to young calves. It was also put in cakes when baking.
