The Wreck of the "Langdale"
One dark night about the year 1863, a square rigged ship, named the "Langdale", became a total wreck at a place called the "Coombe" on Carne Strand. She was sailing from California to Liverpool with a cargo of wheat.
This ship had a crew of about twenty, including Captain Jenkins and his wife. The ship's small boats were launched, but only one succeeded in getting safely to the land. The captain, his wife, and ten of the crew were drowned.
The accident was caused by the ship taking a wrong turn and striking a rock. It was so dark that she could not(continues on next page)- Collector
