  1. One of my father's school pals at Ardattin was Long Foley, who at his prime made up to nearly 8 feet. He was the tallest of a tall family - 4 members of the family were over 6 1/4 feet. He travelled to school from Laney riding on an ass. Even as a boy he had "to lap his legs round the donkey's body" to keep him from "strayling along the ground". He spent much of his life as a sandwich man in the cities of England and was on view in Dublin in the "convict ship". I saw a post card many years ago on wh. were depicted the tallest and the shortest man in the world i.e. Foley and A.N. Other. He spent his last days in Carlow town where I repeatedly saw him walking the streets - long white beard and mackintosh and tall, tall silk hat. Earned thousands; saved none.
