Clarke living near Castlebar was and excellent linen weaver. Bleaching the linen took a good while. The linen was spread out on the grass and sprinkled many times a day with cold water and taken in at night. Every family strove to have a stone of flax to take to Castlebar on Saturday. It was soon bought and sent to the north.
The Hatters.
There were at least two hatters in this famous place. Hats were made of wool coloured black and mixed with goats hair, the whole was moistened with oil rolled out into strips each strip made two hats, a side piece made the leaf, the narrator does not know how the top was put on.
