    Every Landlord had a bailiff. The bailiffs were men who went round to the houses gathering the rent. If the bailiff saw that a person had a good crop of oats or potatoes he would say that you could afford to pay a pound or ten shillings more on account of you having a good crop. This is the way the bailiffs made their money and with that money they also got their wages. The Landlords did not know that the bailiff had this money at all or that he was making the people pay it because it was the bailiff that gathered the rent and
