- In the time of our grandparents boots and shoes were uncommon. Some people never wore boots, others very very seldom. A boy or girl would get their first pair of shoes at the age of sixteen or sometimes on the eve of their marriage. The shoes would last for about fourteen years.
Cobblers were very numerous then because no factories had been established. Leather was obtained from Galway and cobblers kept some as payment when they made a pair of shoes. Leather was made in a place outside Ballyhaunis. A special kind of shoes called brogues were(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
