Slates were used by the infants and copy books and pens or pencils were used by the higher classes. The masters only taught three months in the Winter. This Barnagurry hedge-school was opened only in the year 1868. The scholars began school at the age of six or seven. Fifty scholars attended this school. There was another class or hedge-school in Addergoole in the house of James Judge which is now a ruin and is owned by Patrick Judge.
